1SCB
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms S. Parker

Recommended Prior Learning

NCEA Level 1 Science or Year 10 Science at a Merit or Excellence level. This is an academically demanding course. Applicants will be considered based on their overall achievement in NCEA Level 1/Year 10 Science with an emphasis on their achievement in Biology. Students from Year 10 Science MUST also take 1SCG as a second science option.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES: Devices will be essential for every lesson. Practical work, models, self-paced activities, note-taking, videos. Students will carry out directed research, much of which must be completed in their own time. They will be encouraged to use the Internet as a research tool. Homework is a vital part of the course and students can expect to have regular homework set. This course will likely involve one or two field trips throughout the year.

This course provides students with a deeper understanding of Biology and its applications to everyday life. It is an excellent preparation for Level 2 and 3 Biology. Biology is relevant to all fields of health science; medicine, sports science, animal studies, horticulture, forestry, biotechnology, ecology, wildlife management, agriculture and forensics.

Alternatively, this course could be trialing the new Level One Biology and Chemistry standards being developed for full implementation in 2023.  These four standards are each worth five credits, and are:

1.1 (Internal) Explore a microorganism within the mauri of the taiao

1.2 (Internal) Explore chemical reactions in the taiao

1.3 (External) Explore whakapapa using knowledge of genetic variation and inheritance

1.4 (External) Explore physical properties of materials and their use in the taiao

More information about these standards is available at https://ncea.education.govt.nz/science/chemistry-and-biology?view=learning and confirmation which course structure will be followed will be confirmed before the start of 2022. Students are able to opt for 11SCB on the basis of either course structure, and then change their mind later if the final course doesn't meet their learning needs.
