Course Description

Who would be interested in this course?

Students who are creative or would like to learn how to develop their creativity and express their ideas visually. Suits students heading down the product or spatial design or engineering career pathway.



In this course you will learn through a combination of theory and hands-on projects, to develop the skills and mindset necessary to effectively communicate your ideas visually. You will develop an understanding of, and apply the elements and principles of design through two projects. 

The importance of ideation to generate and refine concepts through visual brainstorming and prototyping will be taught. You will explore various methods to stimulate your creativity and think critically about visual problem solving.

Collaborative work plays a vital role in the field of Design and Visual Communications. You will discover the power of feedback and critique in refining your work, and develop the skills in giving and receiving constructive criticism.

Whether you aspire to be a graphic designer, product designer, architect, or simply want to enhance your visual communication skills, this course will empower you to make a lasting impact through creativity and design. 



This is a full year course and counts as two option course selections.


Course Overview

Term 1
Focus: Understanding the design principles and elements of design and then applying that to a mini project. Students will be taught 2D sketching and rendering techniques. Students will be assessed on their understanding of the design principles and elements assessing against the curriculum along with their 2D sketching and rendering.

Term 2
Focus: Unit 2. Introduction to spatial and product design. Students will research the design brief and develop design ideas in small groups for a chosen site. Students will be assessed through milestone check points.

Term 3
Focus: Unit 2. Continuation of the design process. Students will be working through the design process and developing their chosen design. Students will produce a presentation of their design for assessment against the Level 2 achievement standard.

Term 4
Focus: Understanding and learning the 3D CAD programme Rhino. Students will learn to create a 3D model and understand and produce working drawings.

Assessment Information

Assessment is a digital project based portfolio, freehand sketching and CAD working drawings.
