Course Description

Who would be interested in this course?

This course leads to Level 2 and Level 3 Visual Arts Painting / Design / Photography, and tertiary study for a wide range of careers: graphic design, product design, display design, interior design, architecture, packaging, magazine and book design, animation, illustration, computer graphics, fashion design, textile design, photography, creative industries, and education.

Achievement in Year 9 or Year 10 Visual Arts is preferable but not essential. However, students must have skills in both drawing and painting to successfully complete this course. If you are new to Art, you must seek approval from HOD Visual Arts, Mr Hambridge. You may be asked to show examples of personal work for approval into this course.




The theme for the year is Turangawaewae - ‘a place to stand’. Students will engage in a range of practical drawing and painting processes and procedures. Topics covered include; colour theory, mixing and blending painting techniques to create realistic painted forms, use of acrylic paint mediums and how to work with an artist model to generate and develop pictorial ideas.

Other learning activities could include:

  • Fundamental drawing skills (submitted as a sketchbook for assessment). 

  • Exploring wet media and developing skills (practical knowledge) in watercolour and acrylic (technical development assessment).

  • Artist image analysis (digital or sketchbook / compare and contrast assessment).

  • Developing ideas and creating a mural work in response to Turangawaewae - ‘a place to stand’ theme (Sketchbook). (To support evidence for the Level 2 internal AS2.5 Produce a resolved work that demonstrates control of skills appropriate to cultural conventions).





This is a full year course and counts as two option course selections.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

All course related materials for use in class will be supplied by the school. A list of recommended materials for use at home is as follows: A3 Sketchbook, Shading pencils HB and 2B, Black fine line pen size 0.5, acrylic paint with a basic range of colours, watercolour set and a selection of paint brushes.
