Course Description

Who would be interested in this course?

This course leads to Level 2, Level 3 Visual Art Painting, Design, Photography, and tertiary study for a wide range of careers in photography that include; commercial, forensics, industrial, medical, fashion, documentary, visual arts photography and allied fields such as visual arts, design, screen-printing, publishing, photojournalism, photo finishing, museum and gallery curating, and education.




All students will research established New Zealand, Maori, and International artists. The theme for the year is Turangawaewae - ‘a place to stand’. Students will develop basic photographic skills related to studio practice. They will learn Photoshop tools to edit work. Students will explore Photographic genres of still life, portraiture and landscape. 

Students will generate and complete  task in preparation for a Level 2 Internal Achievement Standard. Their learning will be supported by checkpoints throughout the year.  


Learning tasks could include:

  • Assessed workbook (camera skills) with completed tasks to show how to change camera settings and how to edit in Photoshop.

  • Assessed Photo shoots, working with props and sets, on how to create a good composition.  

  • Image analysis (digital workbook format), 

  • Assessment of Technical Photoshop skills (workbook format). Present evidence of technical ability using Photoshop (selecting / editing / compositing).

  • Developing ideas within photography, thematic research based on identity and producing a small body of work presented onto a single folio panel.

  • A final outcome for AS 2.5 Produce a resolved work that demonstrates control of skills appropriate to cultural conventions.



This is a full year course and counts as two option course selections.

All course related materials for use in class will be supplied by the school. It is highly recommended that a 16GB USB flash drive is purchased and that students sign up for the discount priced Adobe license offered by the school, which will allow students access to Abode Cloud at home.
