Year 10 Technology - Soft Materials

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms S. Wensor.

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop fashion garments and products using a range of fabrics and applied design techniques. Students learn about commercial patterns and how to make minor adaptations to construct a casual wear garment. Skills taught alongside their project are fashion illustration, natural dyeing techniques, upcycling and materials properties.

This course leads to Creative Textiles Technology at Year 11 and supports the learning for NCEA Levels 2-3. Fashion and Textiles Design at Level 3 is university approved and offers scholarship.

This course aligns with the following vocational pathways and career opportunities: Creative Industries, Manufacturing and Technology and Construction and Infrastructure and leads into the following careers: Product designer, fashion designer, textile designer, interior designer, fashion stylist, fashion blogger/ journalist, pattern maker/ CAD operator.

Any student with an interest in soft materials.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Basic fabrics and patterns will be provided. Students that wish to use specialist fabrics are required to purchase their own.
