Year 11 Technology - Food & Nutrition

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms S. Matheson, Mrs J. Hardy.


Students will learn how to critically analyse concepts of nutrition and health within different contexts. Students will learn about nutrients and their functions, health promotion and issues related to the provision of food. 

Students will experience a variety of practical cooking lessons designed to develop their skills and to reinforce their theoretical knowledge and understanding.

The full school uniform is required for practical lessons and must include leather covered toe school shoes. It is mandatory to have hair shoulder length pulled back off the face and tied up. Acrylic or false nails and nail polish will not be allowed at any time.



This is a full year course and counts as two option course selections.

Course Overview

Term 1
Learning Focus: Food Safety. Practical assessment.

Term 2
Learning Focus: Nutrients and nutritional requirements of active teenagers.
Every 3 weeks there will be a 10 question multiple choice test on a particular nutrient.

Term 3
Learning Focus: Group project and presentation on analysing issues related to the provision of food for people with specific food needs

Term 4
Written report on for the internal standard (5 credits)

Students who are interested in nutrition, health, food technology and cooking would be most interested in this course. Students wanting a career in Nutrition, health, health promotion, sports science, personal training, early childhood education etc would highly benefit from this course.
