Course Description

The course will build on the knowledge and skills developed in Year 9 Dance and establish a solid foundation for NCEA Dance. However, the Year 9 Dance option is not a prerequisite for enrollment in this course.
Students will explore dance elements in depth and complete a range of activities for AS90860 Demonstrate understanding of the elements of dance. Four NCEA Level 1 credits will be awarded to successful students.
Students will apply the elements of Dance through choreography and performance and select a dance genre to research. Students will create their own dance works in pairs and small groups, so good group and collaborative learning skills will be necessary, as well as imagination and creative thinking. Students will perform their dances to an invited audience.
Recommended Prior Learning
This is an open entry course. You do not have to have taken the Year 9 Dance option the previous year. An interest in dance and a willingness to explore new ideas and contribute positively in group work is essential. Experience in any dance form including cultural styles and production dance or experience in related movement forms such as martial arts, sport or gymnastics may be useful.
